15,000 Jews Flee Sudeten District; May Go To Russia fty Jewish Telegraphic Agency PRAHA.—The number of Jewish refugees from the Sudeten German districts is now estimated at 15,000 of a total Jewish population in those areas expected to he annexed to Germany of 22,000. About 9,000 of the refugees are now in this city. The Supreme Council of Jewish Communities has formed a refugee committee, placing at its disposal 80,000 kronen (about $2,800) for immediate relief purposes. A second committee has been formed by the Jewish Party and the Zionist Organization to negotiate with the authorities for housing accommodation. Jewish leaders are discussing a plan to settle the Sudeten Jews in Carpatho, Russia, which is sparsely inhabited and offei-s good economic possibilities. A complete district list of Jews and German and Czech Social Democrats (socialists), apparently compiled in expectation German troops would soon march in, was found in a government search of abandoned Sudeten German party headquarters at Duchcov (Dux).
‘Peaceful Defense’ Gets HadassaK Fund By Jewish Telegraphic Agency NEW YORK. —- Hadassah has sent $7,500 to the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem to aid in the “peaceful defense” of Palestine, in addition to regular budgetary commitments. In transmitting the money, Mrs. Moses P. Epstein, president of Hadassah, asserted that havlaga (self-restraint) among the population of Palestine could be strengthened only if defense means were assured. Eighty-two Jewish children between the ages of 15 and 17 left Germany last week for permanent settlement in Palestine, a cable received by Hadassah announced. Thirteen Jewish children from Austria who registered for transfer to Palestine after Anschluss are among the group.
Jews Plan Revolt, Russ Atheists Say By Jewish Telegraphic Ag°ncy LONDON.—Existence of an alleged Jewish counter - revolutionary and Zionist organization in Russia has been disclosed by Bezbozhnik, weekly organ of the Militant Atheists, it was reported from Moscow by the Daily Telegraph. The organization was said to have been headed by a Rabbi Medalye. with headquarters in the central Moscow synagogue and branches in other cities. It is accused of training spies and wreckers, under cover of religious schools, promoting wrecking activities to hinder development of Biro-Vidjan, autonomous Jewish territory in the Far East and of attempts to sabotage Comzet. Government commission for settling Jews on the land.
Holy Day Services At Harvard After Three Centuries By Jewish Telegraphic Agency CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — For the first time in its 302 years, regular High Holy Day services for Jewish students are being held at Harvard University. They are conducted by Rabbi Jacob Hochman, of Chelsea, in Phillips Brooks Memorial Hall, with the approval of the university authorities. The New England branch of the United Synagogue of America is sponsoring the services, which were arranged by Rev. Louis M. Epstein, of Congregation Kehillath Israel, Brookline.
Refugees From Tug Sail To Palestine By Jewish Telegraphic Agency CONSTANZA, Rumania—The final chapter of one of the most pitiful episodes of Germany’s conquest of Austria was unfolded here when a party of twenty-six Jewish refugees from the Burgenland province of Austria who had been marconed on a tugboat on the Danube for five months arrived here en route to Palestine. The party, which was to sail to find a new home in the Holy Land on the S. S. Romania, was released from the boat when their immigration certificates arrived from Jerusalem.
STREETS RENAMED By Jewish Telegraphic Agency BERLIN — Nineteen streets named for famous Jews have been renamed, it was announced officially this week. Among them are those for Dr. August Wassermann, the noted scientist; Alfred Messel, ’amous architect who designed the Berlin Museum, and Georg Hitzig, m-hitert and grandson of Daniel itzig “court Jew” in the time of Frederick the Great.”
FASCISTS WEAK, VIEW NEW YORK—A Fascist coup in any nart of South America is impossible. according to the Rev. Joseph F. Thorning, Professor of Social History at Mary’s College, who has returned from a visit to Argentina. Brazil and Uruguay. He emphasized the love of democracy among South Americans, but added that Nazi propaganda was strong, particularly on the radio.

War Veterans Seek Ban On Immigration By Jewish Telegraphic Agency LOS ANGELES—The American Legion’s twentieth national convention asked the closing of all immigration quotas for ten years. The convention approved in full the report of its National Americanism Committee favoring a reduction of at least 90 per cent in immigration quotas and opposing any kind asylum bill which would make the United States a "dumping ground” for political, class and racial refugees.

Australian Group Studies Haven Plan By Jewish Telegraphic Agency MELBOURNE — The Millions Club, an organization of businessmen supporting migration, has appointed a commission to study the practicability of a proposal to settle 25,000 Jews on Melville Island, 80 miles north of Darwin. Minister of Interior McEwan attacked the proposal as “grotesque” and "fantastic.” Wynne Williams, deputy chairman of the Northern Territory Land Board, stated that the island was entirely unsuitable for the suggested agricultural settlement and warned that an attempt would result in “a horrible debacle.”

BAR PICKS FRANKFURTER By Jewish Telegraphic Agency WASHINGTON. — Professor Felix Frankfurter of Harvard Law School is the likeliest choice to succeed the lata Beniamin N. Cardoza as Supreme Court Justice, according to a survey of opinion among state bar association leaders.
Rosenwald, Hyman, Warburg, Mrs. Cole And Coons On List Jewish leaders of Indiana and Kentucky, meeting here Sunday in a Regional Conference of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, will hear five nationally prominent speakers, all occupying key positions in J.D.C. work, discuss the grave problems confronting American and world Jewry. Addressing the conference, which is to start at 10 a. m. in the Gold Room of the Columbia Club, will be William Rosenwald, youngest son of the late Julius Rosenwald; Edward M. M. Warburg, son of the late Felix M. Warburg; Isidor Coons, National Director of Joint Distribution Committee campaigns; Joseph C. Hyman, Executive Director of the J.D.C., and Mrs. Lois Holland Cole, of the Junior Division of J.D.C. “Round Table” Planned The Conference, which is expected to draw delegates from many communities of the two States, is sponsored by committees of both states in conjunction with national officers of J.D.C. which is the chief American agency for aiding persecuted and impoverished Jewish populations abroad. Delegates will participate in the round-table discussion that will follow reports of the national officials. Regional Sponsors of the Conference are Louis J. Borinstein and G. A. Efroymson of Indianapolis; Robert M. Poliak, Ft. Wayne; Charles W. Morris and Lewis W. Cole of Louisville; and Jay D. Weil of Lexington, Ky. All of the scheduled speakers have long been active in Jewish work and are expected to bring to the Conference a comprehensive picture of the problems confronting the Jews of the world. Rosenwald Follows Father Following the tradition of the Rosenwald family, noted for its philanthropy in all fields, Mr. Rosenwald has identified himself with some of the foremost welfare organizations in America. Mr. Rosenwald has been a vicechairman of the J.D.C. since 1936,
