One of the Women.

Their hands wore cla.-.p- j ed through the bars ; and all the j evidence of earnest affection was; evinced by both parties. -There hding but little work for the prisoners now, they were allowed to prolong the interview for upwards of an ! hour, and would probably have re-1 mained much longer if permitted to do so. On inquiry, it was ascertained that the prisoner was then serving a term of several years for : attempting the life of his wife, having cut her throat and inflicted sev- J eral severe stabs in her breast, from the effect's of which life was for a 1 long time ! band fled, hut he was arrested, tried i and convicted »n the testimony of his wife ; and the interesting female ; outside of the gate, was the forgiv- ; ing wife, who visits him regularly to {condole with him and to comfort ; him, doubtlessffull of regret that she ■ did not exert herself to prevent his incarceration.
