The Doings of Hoosierdom Reported by Wire. OPPOSE GERMAN IN SCHOOLS I Members of Indiana Federation of Clubs Signing Resolution to Keep Language Out of the Public Schools. Indianapolis, Oct. 29.—Opposition to the teaching of German In tije public schools and, consequently, disapproval of action taken recently by the modern language section of the Indiana State Teachers’ association, la expressed In a resolution which is being circulated widely in the state convention of the Indiana Federation of Clubs, in session at the Claypool hotel. Many delegates are signing the resolution, which was prepared by Seventh district women. It was to be brought before the convention for action in the report of the resolutions committee by Mrs. E. J. Robison, chairman. The resolution is as follows: “Realizing that prior to the great World war, German propaganda was injected into America by the insidious methods of the German music and language us taught in the public schools and against which teaching a state law was passed during the World war; and whereas, we, representing 81,000 American boys who sleep on the poppy fields of France because of Germany’s attempt for world supremacy, through such methods, and, whereas an attempt is now being made to repeal the state law affecting German in the schools of the state; therefore, be it Resolved, by this convention assembled, that a protest be registered against a repeal of that law and against teaching of German In the state public schools, and that a copy of this resolution and protest be sent td*the State Teachers’ association recently assembled in this city, a section of which organization acted favorably on the repeal of that law, and a return to the German language to the curriculum." Mrs. Jesse W. Riddle of Lawrenceburg, chairman of the art committee, is unopposed for the office of first vice president, one of the four to be filled by this convention. Mrs. E. F. Culberston is unopposed for treasurer. Nominations were made at the first business session, and voting will be by Australian ballot. The constitution was revised to provide that officers, with the exception of trustees, may not be re-elected.
Babe Dies In Fire. Evansville, Oct. 28. —Fire which destroyed the grocery store And home of William C. Hahn on the Mt. Vernon road, six miles west of Evansville, also buned death the three-year-old son of Hahn. The parents of the boy were in the store at the time, but they were unable to go through the fiames into the bedroom to save their son. About 20 World war veterans, who are stationed at the Bohne anti-tuber-culosis camp near by, rushed to the scene, bat arrived too late to save the buildings, although they saved & few household effects. The loss on the store and home will reach several thousand dollars, the loss being partly covered by Insurance.
Girl Suffers From Lockjaw. Lafayette, Oct. 29.—Miss Grace Gibson, age twenty- employed as a clerk in a local department store, is in a serious condition in a local hospital as a result of lockjaw. It developed from what appeared to be a trifling injury suffered a week ago In an automobile accident. Miss Gibson was riding with friends over a street in which a sewer was being built. The machine struck an obstruction in the road and the occupants were jostled out of their seats. Miss Gibson’s head struck the top of the machine and she was cut in several places. Lockjaw developed. Panic on Lafayette Car. Lafayette, Oct. 29? —Passengers on a North Ninth street car were panicstricken here when. a trolley wire broke, fell across the car and set fire to it.’ Twenty persons inside the car were afraid to leave because the sputtering wire was directly across the doorway, and flames were shooting about the windows. ' It appeared for a short time as though the occupants of the car would be burned, but the fire department was called and quickly ptit out the flames.
Governor Goodrich td Take Rest. Indianapolis, Oct, 28. — Governor Goodrich is planning for a rest of six or eight rnonths immediately following his retirement from office after convening the legislature early in January. He is thinking of touring southern California and ..possibly going to the Hawaiian islands. The governor said he will not be affiliated in any official capacity with the Republican national administration if the Republicans win at the election next week.
Farmer* Ask Injunction. Franklin, Oct. 29.—C. C. Hughes, representing. the Johnson County Farmers’ association, has filed a suit in the Johnson circuit court asking for an injunction to restrain John Gregg, county auditor, from placing a 20 per cent horizontal Increase in taxes on the duplicates in the county, aa ordered by the state board of tax commissioners. The court granted < temporary Injunction and fixed an early date for the hearing.
