Miss Helena Wright returned to her home in Peru Monday after a visit with Miss Lela Paulus of west of town. Miss Ethel Yeoman of Hanna Is spending a few days with her uncles, A. M. Bringle, at Fair Oaks and W. D. Bringle of Rensselaer. Eli Bringle of Orange county and Bilas Bringle of Harrison county are visiting Jesse Bringle of Brook and ’other relatives In Jasper county. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Colyert and children of Chicago Heights, 111., are here for a visit with the latter’s father, J. P. Hammond, and other relatives. Mrs. Charles Goetz and son Carl of Franklin, Neb., are Visiting her sisters-in-law, Misses Mary and Clara 6oetz and Mrs. W. D. Bringle, and other relatives. Darwin Porter, The Democrat’s carrier boy on city route No. 1, is confined to his home with illness and unable to cover his route with this issue of the paper. Petitions are being circulated in Newton county, asking the commissioners to call a special election on the proposition of building a county hospital at Goodland. Those sugar speculators who are hollerin’ for help make a noise that sounds very pleasant to the ultimate consumer whose call for help received no attention from the sugar speculators. —Indianapolis News. The Hotel English at Indianapolis is to be closed Nov. 30 and a moving picture show will occupy the southwest part, between Market street and the lobby of the English theater. No definite plans have been made for use of the north part of the building as yet. Jesse Snyder has sold his poultry farm of about four acres at the east side of town, to Arthur Lee of Danforth, 111., a brother of Mrs. Frank Hamer, of Rensselaer, and It is understood that possession is to be given about Nov. 1, when Mr. Lee will move here. The consideration is understood to have been $6,500.
Mrs. Charles H. Vick, who went to Seattle, Wash., a year or two ago to make her home with her son Christie and family but remained there only a short time, returning to Chicago where she bad since made her home with a daughter, came to Rensselaer Saturday, claiming that she had been kicked out by her children. The old lady is past 80 years of age and almost blind. At present she is staying with Mrs. Elizabeth Jenkins.
White county lost 261 In population during the last decade,. The 1 loss was in the country districts mostly, although Brookston lost 92 and Wolcott 6. Monticello gained 268, now having a population of 2,536; Monon is now 1,357, a gain of 173; Burnettsville, 617, a gain of 84; Chalmers, 528, a gain of 15; Reynolds, 379, a gain of 20. Brookston has a population of 816 and Wolcott 868. The population of the entire copnty is given at 17,351. People,in East Chicago are manufacturing so much raisin whisky that it has become a leading industry. Street Commissioner Peter Sterling resumed his duties last Friday after a two Weeks’ vacation and discovered that the city’s sewer system was completely blocked up by raisins which had already been used in making whisky. During - the past alx months sewer blocking by raisins has been reported to city officials 12 times. It is reported that much of the raisin whisky made in East Chicago is shipped to Chicago and transferred at Burnham.
Several Rensselaer people attended a dance at Hazelden, George Ade’s country home, near Brook Friday night Music was furnished by a Chicago orchestra and a picnic supper followed the dance.
