BEGIN LIVING IT It is pretty generally realized nowadays that more than a book of rules is necessary hi order to establish real community spirit. And it is out of that realization that Community Service has grown. Social students tell us that the spirit of their neighborhood vanishes in proportion as the number of people gathered in any one community increases. That, of course, is due to the fact that, as a community increases in numbers, contact tends to become casual. The neighborhood spirit is subject to the limitations of the market place, the counting room, the office, the factory. Obviously, in order to promote the spirit of tjje neighborhood, the neighborhood must first be established. The spirit of the neighborhood cannot thrive when disembodied. Ours is a world in which disembodied spirits cannot be rated as effective agents. For that reason Community Service holds that the way to establish community life is to begin living it. . Community Service, with the background and experience of the Playground and. Recreation Association and of War Camp Community Service, is driving home the value of organized community recreation; and insisting on the cardinal principle that the way to establish community life is to begin living it.
