JOHN DOE ON POLITICS
Somewhere in Indiana, Meh. 27, 1920. Everett Halstead, Rensselaer, Ind. Dear Sir: I see by the press that a whole box carload of fellows are out as candidates for the nomination as judge in your neck of the woods. Well, what are you going to do? What are you going to say? How are you going to act on election day? " I’m told you said Halleck would make a very fine judge. Also that you said George Williams would make a good one and again that you said Leopold had the brains. So what do you mean by boosting all three? But I know just about how you are. You’ll keep on bragging on all three of these fellows till election day, then just like you to go the last minute and put in a vote for Dunlap or Laßue. I know you. But I’ll tell you what you better do. You better cut out politics and keep busy with those oak fence posts for you have a corner on them —the best posts made. Apply Tennyson’s “Song of the Stream” to your posts and say: Men may come, and men may go, but I go on forever. Send me another carload now. Very truly, JOHN DOE.
