CLAIMED HE SPENT $6,600,000 * DURING WAR. Reports to Congress Charge Neglect Confusion and Chaotic Records Loft by Committee. Washington, Oct 31.—The committee on public information, beaded by George Creel, cost the government about $61000,000 on the face of its “chaotic records,” according to official reports z now before congress, which say the committee’s affairs cannot be wound up for six months because of Jhe confusion. Chairman Creel and other officials of the committee are/Charged with gross negligence in handling the government’s funds in a report by E. K. Ellsworth of the council of national defense, appointed liquidate the committee's affairs. > 1 The committee issued hundreds of checks for individual expenses far in excess of the SI,OOO maximum limit fixed by congress, the report says. ELLA W. WILCOX IS DEAD
Author and Poet Succumbs In East After Long Illness Contracted In England. New Haven, Conn., Oct 81. —Mrs. Ella Wheeler Wilcox, author and poet died at her home, “The Bungalow, in Branford today. Mrs. Wilcox had been ill for some months having had a nervous cpllapee while engaged in war-relief work in England. Mrs. Wilcox was born in Johnstone Center, Wls., in 1855. She was educated at the University of Wisconsin. She was married to Robert M. Wilcox in New York in 1884.
BREWER FIGHTS THE DRY LAW
Jacob Ruppert of Now York, Through Ellhu Root, Bring* Suit Against U. S. Official. New York, Oct. 31. —Jacob Ruppert, the brewer, through Elihu Root, brought suit against Francis G. Chat fey, United States district attorney, and Richard McElllott, deputy collector of internal revenue, to restrain them from enforcing the wartime prohibition law. Mr. Root asks that the Volstead law be declared unconstitutional.
