Bourke of Indiana Harbor, and an East Chicago officer were in “Rensselaer a short time Wednesday while enroute to Kentland, where the two men were In custody who stole the Buick automobile of Mr. Bourke on Tuesday.
Bro. Miller of the Morocco Courier was a business visitor in Rensselaer Wednesday amd came over again Thursday with the sheriff of Newton county, who brought over one of the alleged auto thieves captured up on the Kankakee Wednesday afternoon and placed the latter in jail here, Newton county having no jail, Mrs. Gracg Swim, formerly of this city, but now of Michigan City, has filed suft in the circuit court there for a divorce from her hueband, Elza Swim. Abandonment and failure to provide is charged. The defendant is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Swim, of this city, and the parties were married here on June 18, 1917.
Edwin L. Quarles of Indian polls addressed a slimly attended meeting of businessmen at the court house Thursday forenoon on the alleged discrimination In freight rates, by which Indiana shippers are said to be at a disadvantage over neighboring states, especially Illinois. A committee, consisting of F. L. Hoover, H. H. Potter, D. E. Grow and Fred Arnott, was appointed to investigate the matter. Marriage licenses Issued: July 15, Alonzo D. Stewart of Wheatfield, aged 26 December 5 last, Carpenter, and Virgil, Beatrice Payne, also of Wheatfield, aged 17 May 23 last, housekeeper. First marriage for each. Female being under age her mother, Mrs. Samuel Payne, gave consent to issuance of license.
