J. B. Ashby of Mt. Ayr was in the city on business yesterday. Mary Meyer-Healy was in Indianaipolis on business Monday. Mrs. George W. Hopkins spent yesterday in Remington with friends. Dr. E. C. English will entertain the Jasper-Newton Medical association Friday night of this week. Another rain came up yesterday afternoon, but was much heavier in the southern part of the county than at Rensselaer. During the electrical storm last Friday afternoon Elmer Jacks of southeast of town had a couple of steers quite badly shocked by the lightning.
Mrs. John Hemphill of Oak Para, Illinois, came Monday evening and will remain until after Decoration day with her husband’s father and sisters, I. N. Hemphill and daughters. John will join her here this evening. The economical way to buy correspondence stationery is in pound boxes or bulk quantities. The Democrat handles several different styles and qualities of such papers, with envelopes to match. In Its fancy stationery department. Passenger rates on the railroads are to be increased June 10 to 3 cents per mile, which, in Indiana, means a 33 1-3 per ceftt increase, the rate now being 2 cents per mile. Freight rates are to be increased 25 per cent, beginning June 25, except that coal rates are made on a flat basis and the rate to Rensselaer on bituminous coal from the mines adjacent to the Monon will be increased 40 cents per ton, making the freight rate here $1.47 per ton instead of $1.07.
