Joseph Putts of southwest of town went to Chicago yesterday and will visit until Sunday evening with his daughter.
Mrs. Edward L. Watson and baby left the first of the week for Camp Shelby to join her husband, who is still stationed there. Parrett of Hammond, former pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, was shaking hands with old friends here Thursday afternoon. The two-weeks-old'' daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Eldredge of Barkley township died Tuesday and was buried in Weston cemetery Wednesday forenoon. The Iroquois Roller Mill had customers for grinding from five different counties Wednesday, including Jasper. The other counties -were Benton, Newton, White and Pulaski. Among the Chicago goers Tuesday were Dr. M. D. Gwiri, Sam Fendig, Van Grant, S. Speigel, C. P. Wright, Mrs. J. W. Crooks and daughter Faye of this city, and Dr. E. Besser of Remington.

The Indianapolis News’ staff correspondent at Hattiesburg, Mississippi, says that Mrs. George Healey has moved to New Orleans from San Antonio, Texas, to which place Ihe family moved from Rensselaer several months ago. The trustees of the I. O. O. F. lodge are erecting a good sized coal house in the rear of the heating plant of the I. O. O. F. building and will buy their coal in carload lots hereafter, thus affecting a saving of about $2 per ton, local dealers’ profit.
S. F. Iliff of Jordan township is confined to his bed with sickness. Yesterday’s local (markets: Corn, $1; oats, 68c; wheat, $2; rye, $1.75. The prices a year ago were: Corn, $1.52; oats, 63c. Mrs. C. V. May, assisted by Mrs. S. H. Cornwell and Mrs. iCari Somers, entertained the Jolly club of Remington last evening.
The little eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Phegley of southwest of town, had; his collar bone broken Thursday afternoon. Among the Chicago goers Thursday were G. J. Jessen, B.'"N; Fendig, Oren Norman and Mrs. Firman Thompson and daughter Dorothy. Ruth, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Kepner in the west part of town, got a fall the first of the week and as a result fractured her collar bone.

Probably what was the heaviest rain of the season came yesterday forenoon, starting in about 9 o’clock and continuing until after 12. It was accompanied by quite a little lightning and about two inches of water fell.
Samuel Swanson, a respected Swedish farmer of Center township, Starke county, committed suicide a few days ago by taking carbolic and muratit acid. He had been failing mentally of late and it is supposed that this fact prompted the deed.
Many cattle feeders have placed orders for silos with the Rensselaer Cement Products Co., and material is being shipped to have them erected early. All orders should be placed as soon as possible to enable material to be delivered while the shipping facilities are good.—Advt.
Charles Foreman, who had been citting timber over near Mt. Ayr for Smith & Bell of Decatur, Indiana, got his foot badly cut Thursday morning. The axe slipped and struck his foot, splitting it open almost to the ankle. He was brought to town and the wound dressed. Well, how are things coming with you? We expect some troubles. Miss Florence Ryan of Gillam township, who recently passed an examination lor a government clerical position, will leave next' Wednesday for Washington, D. C., to report for duty. Miss Anna Harmon of near Pine Village, who also taught in the Rensselaer sehqols and resigned her position here before the last term expired to take a better paying position at Superior, Wisconsin, and who took the examination while here with Miss Ryan, also passed but has decided not to Accept the government position, and will continue teaching in Superior, her position there paying a better salary than the government clerkship.

It is easy to see that many of the banks did not comply with the request of the government by buying certificates to an amount equal to ten per cent of their resources and thus loaning that amount to the [ government, but the banks which did do so are entitled to the satisfaction that comes from the feeling of having done their full duty in this service to the country. In fact several of the banks took no certificates at all. Jasper county, with but six banks, took five times the amount of Newton county, with eight banks, and Benton county with thirteen banks; nearly four tiipes the amount of Pulaski coun-, ty, with eight banks, and more than sloo,oo0 t more than White county, with fifteen banks.

E. S. Rhoads, the grocery man, has purchased the Pulling property on College avenue, immediately south of his present residence. The consideration is reported to have been in‘the neighborhood of $1,500. Mr. Rhoads will property, which has been unoccupied for the past couple of years.
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Clark, daughter Ruth and son Harold, accompanied by Ed. Phegley, left yesterday for Liberty, Mississippi, near which julace they have a farm which is occupied by Harve J. Robinson and Charles Porter. They went to Gilman, Illinois, via auto and took the train there for Mississippi.

A card received Tuesday afternoon from D. J. Babcock, and written from Baltimore, Maryland, said that his division, the 105th Engineers. had arrived there about noon Saturday and were en route to port of embarkation. “Deb” has recently secured a transfer to automobile truck driver in the- Engineers division, and said that he liked his new duties much better, Mrs. Sylvester Gray received a letter Wednesday from her nephew, William Mustard of Goodland, who is also In the 105th Engineers, which was written Sunday evening, saying that they were all ready to "go across,” but he knew nothing about just when they would 1 sail, of course.
