A wireless call for help was sent out and friendly destroyers appeared. Full steam ahead was ordered, and the steamer made Avonuiouth, where the wounded and the hospital staff were landed. The Guilford Castle had 450 wounded on board from German East Africa. The attack was made in full daylight.
