When Did FERTILIZER Pay Best? FIGURE FOR YOURSELF. You will see that fertilizer paid better in 1917 than it paid when the fertilizer was cheaper. Money is simply a means of exchange. It represents so many bushels of corn or so many tons of fertilizer. A bushel of corn would buy only 50 pounds of fertilizer in 1914, but in 1917 a bushel bought 75 pounds of fertilizer of like analysis.
