GERMANS IN AMERICA
The address of Otto iff. Kaftm. delivered in Milwaukee last... linn day night, ought to be read and pondered by every man in the United States of German extraction. For the speaker made it clear that the Germany which many of them lore no longer exists. Not only so. bn: he proved that the Germany of today is the bitterest enemy that Ger-man-Americans have. He said: “In the gloomy and accusing procession of infinite sorrow and pain, which was started on that thrice accursed day of July, 1914, the hurt indicted on Americans of German descent takes its tragically rightful place. The iron has entered our souls. We have been wantonly robbed of invaluable pos-

sessions which have come down to ns through the centuries; we have been rendered ashamed of that in whk* we took pride; we have been made the enemies of those of our own blood: our very names the sound of a challenge to the world. Surely we have all too -valid a title to rank amongst those most bitterly aggrieved by Prussian ism. and to align ourselves in the very forefront of those who, in word and deed, are fighting to rid the world forever of that malignant growth. * * * I do not apologize for, nor am I ashamed of, my German birth. But I am ashamed—of the Germany which stands convicted before the high tribunal of the world's public opinion of 'haring planned and willed war; of the revolting deeds committed in BelgStiaß and northern France; of the infamy of the Lusitania murders: of innumerable violations of The Hague conventions, of abominable. and perfidious plotting in friendly countries and shameless j abase of their hospitality, of crime ' heaped upon crime in hideous defiance off the laws of God and men."". For three years it has been the hope of the Xewg that many influential Germans in this feou-ntry would speak oat in condemnation of atrocities. It therefore gives ns pe altar pleasure to print, and emphasize the indictment drawn -fry, Mr: Kahn. That this war was designed, planned and provoked by Germany, he makes perfectly clear. There is no longer any reason to doubt or question the trash off the charge. He quotes a jtiivate letter from a citizen of Austria. Hungary showing that that nation did not desire or expect war. Fnote the Berlin paper Vorwaerts h* KjaOtes. July 29, 1914, as fol- | lows: ‘ The camarilla of war lords !is working- with absolute, unscrupaI lons means to carry out their fearI fut designs to precipitate a world ; ware'" Three months later—three months a ter the beginning of the , war—Maximilan “Harden, a Berlin ; editor, said: -Let tss renounce those miserable efforts to excuse the action of Germany in declaring war. R is not against our will that we have thrown ourselves into this gigantic adventure. The war has not been imposed upon as by others, and by surprise. We have willed the war. It was our duty to will it. We decline to appear before a tribunal Off smiled Europe. We reject its jurisdiction. One principle alone counts and no other-—one principle which contains and sums up all others—might. .■ On the other hand. Sir Edward Grey. British, foreign minister, in his messages "went almost on his knees to* beg Germany to consent to a conference in order to avoid war." Germany made no response except to declare war. Mr. Kahn says, and with perfect truth, that it was not the people of Great Britain that Americans fought in the revolution, hut the spirit of caste "which then held them in sway.” It is so now;. -C>4r war is not with the German people except in as far as they are content to remain subject to the Prussian autocracy. Here, is the Issue: The spirit of Prussianism and the spirit of Americanism can not live ip the same world. One or the other mast conquer. In the mad pride of its contempt for democracy, Prussianism has thrown down the gantlet to ns. We have taken up the challenge,' and now stand arrayed by the side of the other
freedom-loving nations of the world, giving our fresh strength and boundless resources to them who, heroically striving, have borne the. heat and burden of a, dreadi-oiily long and exhausting struggle, yet stand unwearied, erect and resolute. One other quotation will be pardoned: History affords no parallel to the spiritual poisoning and the resulting horrible transmutation of a whole people, such as Prussianism wrought in the. incredibly short period of one generation. Nor would I believe that such a dreaidful phenomenon could possibly take place, were it not for the evidence of my own eyes and my own ears. —lndianapolis News.
PHILOSOPHY OF WALT MASON
Some fine day a man can/travel over Germany and France, and no shotgun, charged with grave. l , will go off and wound his pauce. Once again the tourist legions pay good coin for rotten wine. Wo shall tread the pavements Roman, leaf along the Appian way, and behold no charging foeman, some fine day, some fine day. .When they’ve Stopped this beastly quarrel wo can sail the ocean green, nor be sent down to the coral by a cheap fin submarine. We can sit in quiet arbors drinking coffee Viennese, or be shaved by British barbers with their rusty snickersnees. We can watch the Danube river when the dawn is glowing pink, and eat sausage made of liver in a gasthaus on its brink. Unrestricted we can wander when the war is done away; we can travel here and yonder, some fine day, some fine day. Here at home we are remaining, while we lust to go abroad; there where kings and dukes are reigning, we would like to blow our wmd. We must stay,- for death is tearing, seeking victims on the foam; what a heavy cross we’re bearing, that we have to stay at home! Blood is flowing still in torrents, and the torrents bar our way; bat we’ll -go to Cork or Florence, some fine day, some fine day.

An authority on finance has been investigating American millionaires, and finds that all except twenty started life as poor boys. There will soon be a “corps off ferrets’’ on the battle front in France for the purpose of helping to clear out the rats now infesting the galleries in the chalk hills left by the Germans in their retreat. The ferrets are now being mobilized and several hundred have been shipped. A student officer at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, inherited a $30,000 business from an uncle, with the proviso that he should continue the business. The young man was undecided as *to what he should do until word came that American troops were in the trenches in France. Then he turned down the legacy. < Many officers and men are returning to England suffering severely from shell shock and other
