The Legal News Epitomized —Together With Other Notes Gathered From the Several County Offices. The four damage suits against the New York Central railroad on behalf of the four people killed north of Morocco last summer, have been venued here from Newton county. In the town election at Remington Tuesday C. H. Peck was elected clerk, F. L. Lough, treasurer; M. A. Gray, Frank Howard and Robert Shearer, councilmen. All are Republicans. The total balance of public funds of Jasper county on hand October 31, 1917, was 3322,000. Of this amount SIBO,OOO was stone road construction funds and SBO,OOO ditch construction funds. As it is claimed the cars are needed to transport coal, the government has shut off all stone and gravel shipping for road making. This means that no more work will be done on the stone streets in Rensselaer and stone road contracts in Jasper county until this embargo is raised.
William F. Hodges, who was located in Rensselaer some ten years ago in the practice of law with George E. Hershman, was elected mayor of Gary on the Republican •ticket in a four-cornered fight Tuesday. In 1912 Mr. Hodges was city chairman of the Bull Moose, in 1913 joined the citizens’ party, and in. 1914 returned to the Republican party. Marriage licenses Issued: November 6, Thomas Davis of Kniman, aged X 64. December 19 last, retired farmer, and Anna Putt of Jasper county, aged 45 August 9 last, housekeeper. Third marriage for male, previous marriages dissolved by death. Second marriage for female, first marriage dissolved by death in July, 1916. Married in the clerk’s office by Mayor C. G. Spitler. November 7, Albert Parker Walter of Jasper county, aged 22 June 12 last, farmer, and Marie Logan of Gillam township, aged 19 July 21 last, housekeeper. First marriage for each. November 8, John Domenik Franchi of Jasper county, aged 30 March 8 last, farmer, and MarV Spese, also of Jasper county, aged 23 November 6, housekeeper. First marriage for each. Male was born in Italy, female in Coal City, Illinois, and both now live in Walker township.

The Star Millinery Co. of Indianapolis vs. Carrie D. Short; suit on account. Demand S4OO. No. 8856. Mary E. Pruett vs. Thomas E. Pruett; suit divorce. The complaint alleges that the parties were married March 25. 1903, and separated August 6, 1915; that on August 6, 1915, defendant deserted plaintiff in the town of Pendleton, Oregon, leaving plaintiff without means of support,., and since said time defendant has failed .to provide anything toward support of plaintiff. Plaintiff’s maiden name was Mary E. Hindsley, vrhich she asks to have restored.
