GLEANED from the EXCHANCES
Charles Martin, an old and prominent citizen of Fowler, died Tuesday night, aged 75 years. The war has hit the Fowler Tribune pretty hard. Two of the force have volunteered and the linotype operator left this week for Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to run a “jitney.” Fred M. Schmidt, a rural mail carrier at San Pierre, has been discharged by the department. Two persons made affidavit that Schmidt said he would die before he would fight Germany. Sclupidt denies the charge and avers that he is a loyal citizen.
The roof of the A. O. Jacks store at Lee caught fire last Sunday morning, presumably from a spark from the chimney, but the flames wore extinguished without very much damage other than the burning of a hole in the roof about four feet in diameter.
