It is openly charged in congress that the Council of National Defense is letting contracts for war supplies to its own members at exorbitant prices. But what else is to be expected when the council is composed of the very men who control the output of this country?
The Indiana food production and conservation commission is making a state-wide campaign for more silos in order to save the . corn crop produced this season. While the silo is no longer an experiment but a very necessary adjunct to every up-to-date farm not enough of them are found in the state to meet the demands of the times is the opinion of the commission. J Co-pperating with the JaspenCounty Better. Farming association four silo meetings will be held in the county this week. On nbxt Friday afternoon the first meeting 1 will be hdld» at the Premo theater ,at Wheatfield. County Superintendent-elect Sterrett will open the meeting with a patriotic address. J. C. McConnel, the silo and feeding expert representing the fodd commission, will give an address, upon the value of silos and “give points upon their construction. He will be followed by-H. M. Clark, A. Duggleby. L. Shatzley, M. Jungles, William Fitzgerald, T.' F. Maloney and E.* Finney., who will report on the results that"they have secured. On " the same evening Mr. Me-. Conned will Ispeak at the Parr school house. Prof. Charles Chupp will opOn the with a sketch of the work that he is carrying on. Joseph Kosta, Charles Lakin, IF J. Dexter, James Wiseman, Thomas Florence, R. L. Budd and S. A. Brusnahan will recite their experiences.
On Saturday afternoon at the court house Mr. McConnel will again speak, at 2 o’clock. He will be followed by 'William Folger, Elias Arnold, Charles Reed. Delos Thompson, John Rush and E. P.. Lane, all of whom have had extensive experience with silos and silage feeding. On .Saturday evening at 8 o’clock 'a meeting will be held at the public library in Remington, at which G. A. Williams of this city will deliver a patriotic address. The officers of the West Carpenter Farmers’ club are in charge of this meeting and announce that short talks will be made by Lewis Hunt, Howard Jones, C. A. Hensler. George Putt and Fred Banes. _ There has never been a time when the silo has been needed more or costs less measured in terms of bushels of corn than at present and it is hoped bv the better farming, association officers that these meetings will serve to increase the interest along this line. . ■ : *-
