LEE MAN DID NOT REGISTER

And Is Now in the White County Jail at Monticello. The Monticello Herald says that “Charles Scott, living near Lee, who failed to register June 5, was arrested Monday by Sheriff Williams and placed in the county jail, where he now is. An investigation of the reasons why Mr. Scott did not register is being made by the county board of conscription. He was before the board Tuesday and told an improbable story concerning his attempt to register.- The board is giving particular attention to some of the points in Mr. Scott’s story. He has been working near Newland in Jasper county, where it is said that several refused to register. “Pursuant to an order from the war department any person who failed to register through ignorance or inability to do so, is to be registered without penalty. In this county the names of George W. Key of Cass township and .Ray Tam ,of Burnettsville have been registered. Each of the men showed that the failure to register was unintentional. If Scott’s story is true his name will be placed on the roll and he will be permitted to go free. Otherwise he will be de livered to federal authorities.”
