Richard Olney, -well-known statesman and former secretary of state and attorney general of the United States, died Sunday evening at his home near Boston at the age of 82 years. The Interned German gunboat Cormorant has been blown up at Guam by its ctew. The officers Infused to surrender the boat to the American forces which went to -take possession of her. Two German warrant officers and five enlisted men were killed In the explosion. J. W. Caruthers, of Memphis, Tennessee, was killed by a Monon train at Delphi early Sunday morning. - He wore a cheeked

The Noble county commissioners in session at Albion last week let contracts for the construction of the first nine miles of brick highways in Noble county to tho Northern Construction company of Goshen for $120,450. Bonds totaling $134,000 will be sold this month to cover the expenditure. The roads to be improved are in Perry and Sparta townships'. August Heilman of Otterbein was terribly injured Monday morning when a team of horses he was driving ran away at his farm, nine miles northwest of Otterbein. Mr. Heilman was caught between ths hay gadder and the barn. His noss was broken and one side of his face crushed. He was attended by Dr. O. U. Chenoweth and his condition is quite serious. Gold holdings of the United States treasury Saturday last were the greatest in the world’s history. The total value of the coin and bullion in the vaults was $3,044,309;292. The sum practically han doubled during the last five years. Gold shipments from Canada Saturday to J. Pi Morgan & Co. totaled $2.5,000,000, $15,000,000 going to the Philadelphia mint and $10,000,00(T to the assay office in New York.
Cuba has broken off diplomatic relations and declared war on GerThe four German merchantmen interned in Havana harbor were . seized Saturday and bomba were found in the engine room of one of the ships. It is believed that it was the intention of the officers of the interned vessels tb blow them up rather than have them fall into the hands of the Cubans. Cuba asks to join hands With the United States and furnish 10,000 spldiers. Seven more men, believed to be. connected with German plots, have been taken into custody by agents of the federal government Among them are three Hindus, employed at the United States Steel works at Gary. Another was foreman at a large farming machinery plant while two others were under suspicion of having taken photographs of important railway structures near Chicago. Ths seventh was employed by a large packing concern. Federal agents refused to comment on the detention of the men.
