A sun dial is to be erected in Pasadena, California, in, honor of the twenty-nine men and women who led in founding the place. Beaverville, Illinois, which in the past three years has suffered three disastrous fires and a cyclone in. which many people, were injured and much property destroyed, experienced another fire Sunday in which five buildings were burned. . ■ ♦ The plant which is referred to in the fourth chapter of the book of Jonah as the “gourd,’’ which afforded shade to the prophet before Nineveh, was the caster oil plant. This plant, a native of Asia, is now naturalized in America, Africa and in the south of Europe. A war kite-balloon was recently presented to the United States army by a group of women of New York. Major-General Wood, commander of the eastern department of the army, expressed gratification over the gift and said, that ft would be put into use immediately.
Lyons and Wert shipped seven cars of hogs this week that brought back in returns over SIB,OOO. Two of these loads came from the home farm of Mr. Lyons, one from the leased Washburn farm and one from the Fred Lyons’ 1 farm on which Tood Conn lives. Three of these sold for $15.30 and ope for $15.35. They f paid Fred Lyons $2,590 for his hogs in Brook. Two other cars brought over $5,000.] — i Brook Reporter. J, S. Myers of Hillsboro was arrested several days ago on a warrant sworn out by his wife under what is knowrrfts-t-helazy husband, act, passed* in’ 1915, charging him with neglecting his family. Myers was arraigned before Mayor MeGeorge of Covington, who Jmposed a fine of $25 and costs, to which he added a penal farm sentence of ninety days. It will require 128 days for him to satfsfy the sentence, fine and costs. This is tjie first conviction ever made under, the lazy ,iim* law,* the inakfirium penalty under which is a, fine of SSOO and six months’ imprisonment. * ,
