The Greeks made the owl the* emblem of wisdom. Shakespeare makes the witches add the wing of an owl to their caldron of deadly potion, and “it was the owl that shrieked, th© fatal bellman.” For centuries the owl was accused of such evil practices as luring hunters into dangerous swamps and causing'the bride to commit suicide just 24 hours before the time set » for the wedding. Napoleon exhorted his soldiers, to sleepless vigilance with the command: “Sleep with the owls and get up with the larks.”
