BRITISH SHIPS FROM U. S. TO BE GUARDED BY WARSHIPS. Steamers Carrying Munitions of War Are Assembling Off Virginia Capes. Newport • News, Va.. Feb. O.— British steamers carrying munitions of war are assembling in the Atlantic ocean off'Hnr V irginia Capes and w ill be convoyed to England by a British warship, according to information here. It was said that more than a score of vessels had gathered at the rendezvous and that the fleet with its convoy would get away either today or Saturday. New York,' Feb. 9.—The HollandAmerica line steamship Ryndani, which sailed froqi New York for Rotterdam January 29 with the American conciliar agent at Luxemburg and nearly 100 other cabin passengers, and which was reported to be returning to this port, was warned by a German submarine to turn back when about to enter the “war zone.’’ according to unofficial advices received; here. A wireless message from a passenger oil board the Kyndam contained this information. 'Die Ityndam was on her way to Rotterdam by way of Falmouth, and was within 14 hours’ steaming of the latter port when she swung around for the return trip to American waters. The ship is expected to reach New York Saturday or Sunday, unless she is compelled to put into Halifax or Bermuda for coal. The Ryndam. although a Dutch vessel. flies the American flag. Agents of the American line, which is holding the steamships St. Louis and St. Paul in port here, said that the St. Louis would I>< dnpatched to Liverpool if the company could obtain suitable guns to be mounted on the vessels and 50 shells for each ship. Meantime the sailing dates for both steamers were still undecided.
