Terre Haute. —Crawford Fairbanks, millionaire brewer, and his brother, Edward, have offered to give a 24-acre tract south of the city for park purposes. Logansport.—John Woodward, for-ty-seven, has escaped from the Northern Indiana Hospital for the Insane. He was sent to the Institution from Wabash. Warsaw.—An alleged “blind tiger” operated by Frank Compton, seventyyears old, in m small shack near the heart of the city, was raided. Compton was arrested. Bloomington.—The Monroe county grand jury was summoned to meet Tuesday to investigate liquor law violations. Judge Miers and Prosecutor Barclay have charge of the inquiry. ' Greenfield. —-The county commissioners appointed Elmer E. Bussell county attorney; Oscar Heller, physician ; John Turk, custodian of the courthouse; George Hammer, engineer. Lafayette.-—Conrad Hut! of Danville, 111. who died here under peculiar circumstances, committed suicide according to a verdict rendered by Coroner Van Reed. An autopsy was held and arsenic was found in the stomach.
Anderson.—Fred Marhanka, age seventy-three, is in jail here, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill as a result of stabbing Chester Puckett, twenty-four, during a fight. Bucket tis in a serious condition, it is said. Decatur.—French township, Adams county, voted wet Tuesday. 93 to 43. Muncie.’ —Wesley Coffee, colored, thirty-four, was killed when he fell into machinery he was operating in the Muncie foundry and machine works. Goshen.—A large house on the William Lewis farm, east of Goshen, burned. The tire started from a defective flue. Mrs. Gustavus Rosentrager, wife of the tenant and her three small children were in the house when the lire was discovered. The loss was about $4,000. Connersville.—Three persons are in serious condition as the result of a close-range battle between Robert Agee and son and two patrolmen who tried to eject the Agees from their home. Robert Agee was probably fatally injured and his sixteen-year-old Son was badly shot. Patrolman Harry Daniels has a bullet wound in his thigh. Patrolman Adams shot the Agees after the father had shot Daniels. It is said Agee had sworn to kill anyone who attempted to force him to leave his house.
Indianapolis.—Many .alleged violations of the election laws in Logansport will undergo the close scrutiny of the federal grand jury, it was reported here. Investigators have made a report concerning charges that negroes were registered illegally. Many of them, it was reported, were laborers and were living in railroad box cars. Indianapolis.—David It. (Bat) Masterson. convicted of perjury in connection with the civic troubles in Muncie, wtis sentenced to two to twenty-one years in prison by Judge Weir, lie will appeal. Indianapolis.—The township trustees of Indiana in the closing session of their convention decided to recognize the need of reorganization of the country' school system of the state. The action of the trustees, who voted to name a committee of five to confer with educational authorities, came after a heated debate. Many of the leading educators have advocated the abolition of the office of township trustee in the school system. The trustees will ask the legislature to raise their Siriary to §3.50 per day. All the officers were re-elected.
Indianapolis.-—-Prodded by special instructions from Judge Anderson of tin* federal court the federal grand jury began a re-investigaijon of the alleged intimidation of Colored voters by the police, and other alleged frauds in the 1914 primary and election in Indianapolis. Twenty-five politicians xvelre summoned as witnesses. Judge Anderson’s order of an immediate probe into these alleged violations will delay the investigation into the 191'5 election in Indianapolis and the grand jury's report in the investigation in Lake county. Gary.—Drastic enforcement of dead letter blue laws was threatened by Mayor It. O. Johnson as his reply to demands that he eliminate vice in Gary or face impeachment proceedings. Among Other things, he announced that the Sunday lid on saloons would be clamped down tight. "The aidermen who are demanding an unnveded cleanup are insincere and grandstanders,” said the mayor. “In public they demand a cleanup. In my office they tell me they want only reasonable regulation. They will get what they demand publicly. The' city is as clean as it ever was ajid their charges are untrue.”
