LAND 202 SHIP PASSENGERS
It is an election day tradition that good weather is Republican weather. Last Tuesday it was generally fair and warm; but in lowa it was cold and rainy. And the only spot west of the Mississippi from which the Republicans can extract solid comfort is Iowa; so this hoary fiction gets a jolt. But it is not a fatal blow. It is simply enough to raise a reasonable doubt as to the trustworthiness of these political saws. There was some satisfaction for in this last election, and there was all kinds of weather. There was a snowstorm in Colorado; which was as it should he, according to the G. O. P. It was a cold day in California also; but not nearly so cold as it is going to be for somebody a little later on in that state, when the returns are all in. In Wisconsin the weather was overcast, and this is about the way that both parties felt in that state. It takes more than weather to pull out a political victory. The state of mind and the zeal of the voter seems to have something to do with It.—Exchange.
There is always a percentage of election officers that seem to think that the returns belong to them. What they do with them the first two or three days nobody has ever been able to find out. Reports are that t&e officers first eat a hearty meal, then take a night’s sleep, then do some chores and finally begin the count. When they have finished the count they forget to tell anybody the result, and take another night’s sleep. Along about Saturday when they have to go to town anyway they take in the election returns to the county seat and the wor.ld that has grown drowsy on the election once more wakes up to find out what really has been done.—lndianapolis News.# The election of President Wilson verifies the straw vote taken before the election by the 8.000 Rexall drug stores in the United States, but while a few of the states did not go as the straw vote indicated, 4he material result of the nation as a whole was borne out.
In the election Tuesday a number of states voted on prohibition and Michigan, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, Utah and Florida were added to the dry column. This makes a total of twenty-five states that have now adopted state-wide prohibition.
When walking in the shadow of death it is wise to hunt the sunny side of the road.
