WEASEL-SKIN PLETHORIC OF OHIO.
In what is being done with the enormous surplus of earnings in Ohio disclosed by the recent bank statement is found the greatest assurance for the future. Experienced officials of state in charge of building and loan associations and of the state chartered banks say that thousands of residents have saved or borrowed to build homes or buy farms, a significant indication of real prosperity. An interesting calculation by the state bank superintendent shows that if all the money /saved last year were distributed evenly among the people of Ohio each would received $31.85. The number of individual deposits is 22 per cent larger than last year, when there was a gain of 15 per cent over the preceding twelvemonth, the gross sum deposited in all banks being $1,078,007,940. The building and loan associations gained $124,404,504 in*the eighteen months ending June 30 last. These gigantic figures disclose the information that despite the rise in the cost of living the really frugal American people are making ready for the future. No one can now foresee the break, but when it comes suffering will not follow the depression in employment. Given two more years of the current golden prosperity, this nation could face with equanimity a panic similar to those of 1893 or 1907. All our people are not the crickets of the fabte, who sang all summer while the ant laid up a winter’s supply of food. Perhaps their present remarkable thrift is due to the ding-donging into their ears by the politicians of the fearsome cry of “After the war-—what?” If so, then let our praise be poured forth to these Jeremiahs. Unwittingly they have done the nation a good turn.—Cincinnati Enquirer, October 26, 1916.
