Indiana Militia on Move. Indianapolis.—Three thousand members of the Indiana National Guard will move to the concentration camp at Fort Benjamin Harrison Friday or Saturday of this week, according to Adjt. Gen. Frank L. Bridges. Most companies, it was said, have been recruited up to peace strength and are still increasing their size. Six recruitj ing offices have been opened in the ! downtown district here and the business section has taken on a martial aspect. Mexicans Are Starving. Richmond.—-Sarah 11. Charles, one ,of several Friends missionaries who have returned here from Matpmorijs mission and other points in Mexico on advice of American con- , sular agents, declared that poor Mexij cans are starving in great numbers in the interior and that the failure of the punitive expedition to capture Villa has resulted in the Mexican people t adopting a sneering and hostile atti- ! tude toward the Americans. She predicted a h»ng-drawn-out campaign if hostilities result. Woman Found Guilty. Laporte.—After an all night’s session the jury in the case of Mrs. Mattie Hauckin, self-confessed slayer of her husband, John Houckin, returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter, imposing a sentence of two to twenty-one years. She pleaded selfdefense while the state demanded the death jenalty. Mrs. Houckin killed her husband when she found he had an engagement to take another woman to a dunce. Storm Does Great Damage. Columbus. —Immense damage was done by a violent windstorm which swept Bartholomew county. The wheat crop, which is nearly ready to harvest, was ruined in places. A wooden bridge over White river was blown down and many farm buildings were demolished. The Eagles’ home here was badly damaged when struck by lightning. It is believed no lives were lost.
Woman Dies of Injuries. Kentland. —Miss Greta Thompson, twenty-two, who with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Thompson of this, city, was seriously injured May--20 in an automobile accident near Bedford, died in Mercy hospital in Chicago. Mrs. Thompson has been taken from Bedford to Martinsville, and Mr. Thompson has about recovered. Leagues Won’t Unite. Indianapolis.—Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, nationally known suffrage leader, departed from Indianapolis after having failed in her purpose of uniting the Equal Suffrage association and the Woman’s Franchise league, the two largest Indiana suffrage bodies, for a fall campaign. Old Church to Celebrate. Tipton.—The Christian church at Petersburg, which was organized June 26, 1544, five months before Tipton county was organized, will hold a homecoming celebration June 25. Leonard Shoemaker established the church, which was known at first as the Indian Prairie Christian church. Find Man's Body. Evansville. —The body of John R. Ehman, fifty, a contractor, was found by two small boys in the eastern part of the city*. He left his home telling his wife and daughters he was going out for a walk. A revolver was clutched in his right hand and there was a bullet hole in the temple. Discuss Plans. Montlcello. —-Members of every woman’s club in the county will he guests at a Centennial tea at the public library here by the White county centennial committee. Plans for Woman’s day at the county centennial celebration in October will he discussed. Plan Big Celebration. Lafayette.—Citizens of Tippecanoe county, at a mass meeting, decided to hold a lug centenmaTl-erebra-tion here early in October. Judge H! H. Vinton was elected president of the citizens’ association which will have charge of the observance. Kicked by Mule. Newcastle.—Ul.vsses Denton, driver for the S. P*. Jennings Lumber company, suffered a compound fracture of his right leg when he was kicked by a mule. ' .. , 4 ——————— Dies of Injuries. Andersen. —Claude Hatton, thirtyeight, laborer of Alexandria, was killed by a passenger car on the Union traction line between Alexandria and El wood. Hatton was walking on the tracks. Carpenters Strike. Kokcmo. Union carpenters here went on strike after the failure of negotiations with the contractors for an advance In wages. The negotiations had been carried on since June ,1. The anion has 185 members.
