THE KILKENNY CATS.
Have Nothing On Our Republican Friends When It Conies to Peace and Harmony. At the Republican district meeting held in Rensselaer Tuesday afternoon to elect a new district chairman, Lawrence Lyons of Brook, manager of W. T. McCray’s gubernatorial campaign for the nomination for governor, was elected chairman; Ray Cummings of Kentland, secretary, and G. H. McLain treasurer.
In speaking of the fine work of the Republican machinists, the Lake County Times, the leading Republican paper of that county, says: “Warren T. McCray punished Lake county yesterday and also took a good punch at Porter county. “Angered because James P. Good- j rich, the next governor of Indiana,' carried Lake and Porter counties by j such a big majority, McCray's campaign manager, Lawrence Lyons, was elected Tenth district chairman and the most important and populous portion of the district was absolutely ignored. “Ray Cummings of Kentland was elected secretary and George McLain of Rensselaer was chosen district treasurer. Both were strong McCray * men. “The work was all done in caucus and the convention work in reality - was perfunctory. The county chairmen found that the cards had all been shuffled and dealt when the final meeting was on and Lake county held a measly little two pair when the show-down took place. “Incidently the late unpleasantness in Lake county had a great deal to do with it. George M. Foland's determination to be county chairman before the primaries despite the pleadings and prayers of the leading Lake county politicians found an echo at Rensselaer. Dr. Frank W. Smith of Gary having the pledge of the Benton county chairman, Thomas Fleming, was a candidate for re-elec-tion and got Fleming's vote on the first ballot. C. B. Tinkham on Dr. T. E. Bell’s declining to be a candidate got the votes of Lake, Porter and White counties and these three* stuck for Tinkhaip to the finish. It; was a signal honor for Mr. Tinkham j that Lake and his old home county; of Porter should stick by hint. Mr. 1 McCray’s elevator triends in Porter were not influential enough in landing, A. X. Worstel for Lyons. “Just what influence the meeting yesterday will have on the selection j of delegates to the national eonven-, tion remains to be seen. The south j end of the district is now all power-( ful and may tight lor Congressman Wood and Tom Preston to represent the district, but if they do.- it will be goodbye to the south end henceforth. ! The north end is entitled 10 a delegate to the national convention or, it will know the reason why. “At the meeting yesterday it was; resolved that we hartilv endorse and give our support to the Tenth district candidates for state office, name-1 ly, Julius Friedman for lieutenant-: governor, Truman F. Palmer for judge of the appellate court, Ele Starsbury for attorney-general, Frank lleighway for swperintendefif of pub-' lie instruction, and Hon. Will R. Wood for congress.’’
