Walker Township People Narrowly Escape Serious Accident.
Mr. and Mrs. Steven Salrin and baby and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Barnes of Walker tp., were driving to Rensselaer Monday forenoon, when they had a very narrow escape from being killed at the Main street crossing of the Monon in Rensselaer. Mrs. Salrin was driving the car, a new Ford, and when they started to cross the tracks the gate-tender lowered the gates, the piece that rests on the ground striking and breaking the windshield, while the heavy part struck Mrs. Barnes on the head, raising quite a lump thereon.
It seems the north-bouhd local freight was doing switching, and, seeing a car being pushed toward them, Mrs. Salrin hastily turned the jar sidewise and all jumped out and pushed the car out of the way. The gates were then raised, tliey state, and they once more started across the tracks, when down came the gates, again imprisoning them, and a warning shouted by a brakeman, who was on a car being moved, only saved them again from being struck. A claim for damages to the car and the injury to Mrs. Barnes will be presented to the railroad company, it is understood. Let The Democrat supply you with typewriter ribbons and carbon par pers. We have ribbons for all makes of standard typewriters, and handle the very grade of carbon papers.
