Prohibition and Temperance By James C. Kelly The failure of prohibition to decrease either intemperance or the quantity of alcoholic liquor consumed is shown by official government and state reports. This fact, often used by the liberals assn argument against the “dry” propaganda, has caused the prohibitionists to ask: “If prohibition decreases neither intemperance nor the quantity of liquor consumed, why do those interested in the liquor business oppose prohibition?” On the surface this question is a poser, but like many prohibition arguments, it is all on the surface. Prohibition by its own admission, aims only at the licensed and legitimate dealer or manufacturer of alcoholic beverages. It worries not over the intemperance of man or the manufacture and consumption of strong drinks by the individual. Its one purpose is to wipe out the legal and licensed industry, and quite naturally that industry fights back. Yes, it has been demonstrated that prohibition does not promote temperance, and no proof is needed to show that legitimate liquor industry is fighting prohibition. Recently my attention was called to the case of a man who, ordinarily liberal, was assisting a prohibition movement in his town. An investigation disclosed the fact that this man was selling flavoring extract which, if added to raw alcohol, would produce “real liquor”. - That is one reason why the legitimate manufacturer opposes prohibition. Again the legitimate trade does not relish the prospect of being forced out of business only to have the local demand supplied by mail order houses which operate without interruption. The heavy shipment of strong and, in many cases, adulterated liquor into prohibition territory is a matter of common knowledge. The legitimate liquor trade is not fighting temperance for it realizes that intemperance is it worst enemy. It is fighting prohibition as a matter of self-preservation. The opposition of legitimate manufacturers and licensed dealers in liquors to prohibition measures which do not decrease drinking is not so strange as the professional “drys” would have us believe. —Adv.

Tom Parks, who lives on the fruit farm over in Newton county, was in the firs! of the week having some blacksmithing done and reported the serious accident that befell one of his bbys, who is staying with his grandfather at Cherryville, 111., and going to school, but which might have been more serious. At their place there was an old dug well, 8.0 feet deep, walled up with brick, and which they had discarded and thought they had filled it up a number of years before, and in which had been left a 1 % inch well pipe. While working about the boy stepped onto the filling of the well, which had settled, perhaps a foot, when he fell through down a distance of 3b feet breaking one leg and was considerably bruised and cut. The lad took hold of the well pipe and climbed the entire distance to the top, where his sister, who was the only one that witnessed the accideni, grabbed him as he was just in a collapsing condition, and with all of the strength she could put forth, succeeded in pulling him out. It certainly was a close call.

Hiking Best Grip Killer.
The epidemic of influenza that has been troubling the city for nearly a month continued last week, according to a mortality bulletin issued yesterday by the board of health. The statement says there were 35 deaths in the city last week from this cause, or 20 more than the number for a single week in 1914. Deputy Health Commissioner Emerson says the best way to avoid catching influenza is to walk a mile in the open air twice a day. It will add 10 years to a person’s life, the doctor asserts. The number of deaths reported during the week was 1,778, compared with 1,566 in the corresponding week of 1914, the death rate increasing from 14.63 to 15.98 per thousand of population. Despite the epidemic of influenza the death rate for fne first 16 weeks of the year, 14.66, is .81 below the mortality for a similar period of 1914.—New York Sun.

Sea Gave Up Old Car.
A unique instance of the sea giving up its dead—although in this case the fullest allowapce must be made for poetic license —came to light recently at Newport Beach, on the southern coast of California. The “dead” took the form of a Southern Pacific flat-car, which was washed into the ocean a quarter of a century ago, and ever since had lain at the bottom of the sea; In 1890 a terrific storm washed part of the pier away, three flat-cats thus being lost. Two were later washed up on the beach, but the third was never seen again until a recent storm of unusual violence brought it to light not far from the spot where it had disappeared so many years ago. Though covered with rust, the iron ' truss rods and couplings are in fairly good condition, and the wooden beams do not appear to be much the worse for their long immersion.—Argonaut.

“TOUCH NOT MINE ANOINTED”
1 Samuel 26.—Slay 16. King David’s Trying Experiences—Ths Cave of Adullam— King David’s Nephews Water From Bethlehem. David Twice Spared King Saul’s Life. Lessons of the Hour. "Love your enemies, do food to them that hate you.”—Luke 6:21. OUTLAWED ain| hunted by King Saul, David was joined by unfortunates ostracized from society, and soon found himself at the head of a company of about four hundred men, more or less armed. It was a great training for his future kingdom work. Amongst these were three of David’s nephews. One was Joab, who became captain of the host Ablshal and Asahel were the others, who afterward became renowned. For a time David and his company occupied the cave of Adullam. It is
greatly to his credit that he refused to plunge his nation into civil war, as he would have been abundantly able to do. But he remembered that the Lord, through the Prophet Samuel, had anointed him to be king; and that it was for him to abide God’s time for overthrowing
Saul and making him his successor. It was because David was thus full of faith in God and possessed the spirit of obedience to Him that he was called a man after God’s own heart—not that he was perfect, but that the Lord's will was his real heart’s desire, and whenever through weakness he took a different course, he promptly repented on seeing the mistake, Implored Divine forgiveness and changed his course. While sojourning at the cave of Adullam, David, In a fit of homesickness, referred to the fine well-water of his Bethlehem home, intimating how much he would relish It. Thereupon three of his followers undertook the perilous journey, unknown to David. They were outlaws, and Bethlehem was In the hands of the Philistines; yet these brave men obtained a waterskin from the favored well. When they presented It to David, he declared that the water was gotten at too great a cost to be lightly used. Then he poured It upon the earth as a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord for the blessings they enjoyed and for the support of such loyal associates. Surely David’s devotion to the Lord and his faith were well manifested! Training For Kingdom Work. When David and his followers w’ere at Nob, Ahlmelech the priest showed him kindness. King Saul, learning of this through a spy, slaughtered the priests of that place and their lineage. This brought to David one of Ahlmelech’s sons with the priestly ephod. A prophet had also joined David. All this convinced King Saul the more that God’s favor was departed from him. Nevertheless he continued to fight against the Divine Program. On one occasion David and his company were occupying a cave on the west side of the Dead Sea, when King Saul and his men entered the cave for rest and refreshment David and his associates were further back in the cave; and when Saul’s company entered, David’s band desired that Saul be killed, that thus their trying experiences might be ended. But David would not consent. However, he cut a piece from Saul’s robe as a demonstration that he could have killed the king had he been disloyal. After the king and his company had gone a certain distance, David and his men showed themselves and protested that Saul was not appreciative of their
Saul Spared In the Cave.
On this occasion, David and his nephew entered Saul’s camp and took from beside his head his spear and his water-bottle. Then from an opposite hill, a ravine between, David pointed out to the king that he was not only more vigilant than Saul’s soldiers, but more loyal to the king’s Interests; and that to pursue him was a mistake. A Profitable Lesson. David’s explanation of his unwillingness to take his enemy’s life was that Saul’s was the Lord’s anointed, and that to assault the king was to attack the Almighty's arrangements. This he could not conscientiously do. “Touch not Mine anointed.” It Is well to have this principle in mind. We are not to think of the kings of today as the Lord’s anointed, however. They are their own anointed. Their kingdoms are kingdoms of this world. On the contrary, Israel was God’s special kingdom, under a special covenant arrangement. By Divine authority King Saul bad been anointed with the special anointing oil, typifying the Holy Spirit. David’s anointing with the samp oil was not to give him a right to Interfere with the Lord’s anointing previously accomplished in Saul, but to assure him” that he was to be Saul’s successor. /

loyalty and sought their lives when they would not take his. Saul’s better nature was aroused; and he wept, saying, “Thou art more righteous than I.” For the time the hunting of David was abandoned. Nevertheless, there was a similar experience later.
