Radium in Cancer Cures.
Year by year science continues to drive back the outposts of disease. The recent report of the great radium institute of London, the largest institution of the sort in the world, shows the progress that has been made in the use of radium in the last year. * This comparatively new curative agent is especially useful in dealing uh superficial cancers of the skin and with cases that are not easily operable, it is so conveniently handled that it can get at growths which cannot be reached by the X-rays. Cancer of the mouth, or palate, for instance, can be readily dealt- with by radium, for the patient can take •the radium in the mouth. One of the interesting achiever meats of radium is its effective treatment of those disfiguring birthmarks commonly known as “port wine stains.” The case of a porter is reported -who had several times been refused employment bacause of the purple stain on his cheek. This was made entirely unnoticeable by the radium treatment! ■ Of the 74 6 cases treated in the Radium ' Institute last year there were 69 apparent cures, while 328 were reported improved. Of course a large number of cases reach such an institution in too advanced a stage to be remedied.—Kansas City Star.
