Women Must Study Social Problems to Use Ballot Successfully By MEYER LONDON, Socialist Congress* man From New York IF all the women in the United States save one were indifferent to the vote and that one wanted jt I would give it to her. It seems to me as absurd to argue about the suffrage question as it would be to get up and talk to a lot of union workers on the. S ..» duty of labor to organize. ' But assuming h ' once for all'that Ik. women have the right to the / vote the question remains, “Are they going to use it for . foollSll fegisla- Press Association, tion, one of our worst dangers?” meyer London. AND THE ANSWER IS THAT IF THEY ARE GOING TO IMPROVE ON MEN’S HANDLING OF THE BALLOT THEY MUST BK I’.ETTER EDUGATED THAN MEN AND BETTER EDUCATED THAN r MTEY ARE NOW. The education our future voters, both men and women, need is an education in social problems which will enable them to do awgy with our greatest evil—poverty. EVERY WOMAN TODAY NEEDS TO EDUCATE HERSELF ON THIS POINT, AND THE OBLIGATION ON THE RICH WOMAN IS EVEN GREATER THAN ON THE POOR.
Parents Lax In The Home Training Of Their Children By Mrs, B. F. LONGWORTHY, Member National Congress of Mothers THERE is evident in our present day standards of conduct for home ljfe a reaction from the too severe training of two generations ago. This has resulted in a lowering of standards and a looseness of training on the part of parents, OF WHICH THE VERY REAL SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF OUR BOYS AND GIRLS ARE A DIRECT RESULT. WE ARE FA I L ING TO ESTABLISH IDEALS AND IN CONSEQUENCE ARE FAILING TO PRODUCE CHARACTER. If the tone of home conversation were kept scrupulously pure and fine, would the world so easily be able to leave its smutty linger print upon our children’s lips? If true patriotism were taught around our family tables bad politics in America would die. AND IF TRUE RELIGION, WHICH IS SIMPLY LOVE OF GOD AND MAN, WERE TAUGHT IN OUR HOMES REGARDLESS OF SECT OR CREED WE WOULD BE PUTTING OUR CHILDREN IN THE WAY OF SOLVING THE PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD.
War Is Depraved and Incapable of Improvement By Dr. JOHN WESLEY HILL, President International Peace Forum ONE RAY OF THE DAWN I SEE IN THE INCONTROVERTIBLE EVIDENCE NOW BEFORE US THAT WAR IS SO TOTALLY DEPRAVED AND DEVILISH THAT IT IS UTTERLY INCAPABLE OF IMPROVEMENT. If in this twentieth century war gloats amid scenes of cruelty utterly beggaring human description and imagination, what evidence is there to show that it is capable of improvement, that the soldiers in embattled ranks today are any the less a wild, insane and butchering mob than they were in the darkest period of the world’s history? Improvement, did you say ? WHY, WAR IS ITS OWN CONDEMNATION, GROWING EVEN MORE HATEFUL WITH THE ADVANCE OF CIVILIZATION, BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH MORE INTENSELY AT VARIANCE WITH RECOGNIZED INTELLECTUAL AND ETHICAL IDEALS.
