WHY THIS CHANGE OF HEART?
Remington Press Also Asserts That Railroad Promotors Said No Sub- ’ sidles Would Be Asked For. Elections for the voting of subsidies to aid in the construction of the Lafayette & Northwestern Traction Co. line have been called in two townships in Newton county, where in Beaver township, at least, they stand about as good a show of getting it a;s they would in Carpenter township this county—and that is nil. They are also asking for elections in two townships in Jasper county, Marion and Newton. They may win in Marion but not likely, and there is little chance in Newton. The people have been played horse with too many times to cotton to this game any more. We were told by the promotors of this ( line when they were in Remington that under no circumstances would this company ask for subsidies, and that the voting of them was only a relic of the dark ages. Now the same people who denounced Mr. Roberts and his workers are following their plan and expect the people to fall for their game. Barnum said—well, no matter what he said it is so—but there comes a time when those who have been humbugged often, enough, get wise and refuse to be the goat any longer.—Remington Press.
