Commissioners’ court will convene next Monday. Attorney Jasper Guy of Reining ton was looking after abstract work here yesterday. This is the last week of the Newton circuit court, and after a week’s vacation the April term of the Jasper circuit court will convene here, on April 12. #. County Recorder and Mrs. Georgb W. Scott left yesterday for Rochester, Minn., where the latter will undergo an operation for the removal of her tonsils.
After a few days respite from any regular hoarders, Sheriff McColly received two parties from Remington Saturday night, about midnight, who were brought over by the marshal to lay out a fine and costs for plain drunks. The new boarders are James Neff and Henry Conn.
Marriage licenses issued: March 29, John Obed Hurley of Walker tp., aged 30, occupation farmer, to Elsie Wave Stevens of Rensselaer, aged 16 July 10 last, occupation housekeeper. Second marriage for male, first marriage having been dissolved by divorce Feb. "20, 1915; first marriage for female. Manda Ellen Bucli, of Rensselaer, mother of female, gives consent to issuance of license. Married by Squire Spitler in the clerk’s office.
It is reported that several of the local sportsmen are taking out hunters’ licenses and expect to hunt ducks and geese regardless of the federal migratory bird law. If so, they are taking chances that it would seem no reasonable person would care to take, for the federal government doesn’t generally make and distinction when it comes to getting after violators of the law, and it is a violation of the law to hunt and kill migratory birds. Better play on the safe side, boys.
Newton circuit court items of interest to Jasper county readers, taken from the Kentland Democrat: The criminal suits against Henry and Roy Granger were set for trial last week, but the defendants filed affidavit for change of venue, on which the court ruled favorably and the cases were sent to Jasper, county for trial. In case of James H. Gilbert vs. J. Luce Bartoo, attachment proceedings, venued from Jasper county and tried by jury Friday; jury returned verdict for plaintiff and assessed amount of his recovery at >$ 1,664.61, and costs. In case of Kinder Kennedy et al vs. Sarah Ann Kennedy, executrix, motion for change of venue from county filed Tuesday; motion granted and cause venued to Jasper cii cult court, conditioned that change is completed in three days.
New suits filed: No. 8J592. Kinder Kennedy et al. vs. Sarah Ann Kennedy, executrix, et al; transcript from Newton county. No. 8393. Ed Oliver vs. Herb} Garrrott; action to enjoin defendant from excluding plaintiff from possession of parts of land occupied by defendant as tenant under lease alleged to have terminated Feb. 28, 1915, previously made with one Okey Cole, who then owned said land but has since sold a part of same to plaintiff, it is alleged. No. 8394. Ed Oliver vs. Ellisoit Camber same kind of case as above, defendant occupying lands under same kind of lease from same party. No. 8395. Dr. Achilles Davis vs. John Roorda; suit on account. Demand $149, alleged to be balance due plaintiff for medical and surgical services performed on defendant’s daughter, Ella Roorda, in 1909,
the full amount having been $249, but defendant is credited with having paid SIOO Feb, 4,’’1911. No. 8396. Alfred B. Lowman, supt. of construction, vs. Barkley Civil Township; action to collect $750 assessed against said township for the construction of the S. C. Irwin's stone road, and which it is understood, Trustee Davisson refuses to pay because the township could not legally be assessed for said road.
