Very Good Attendance at Agricultural Meeting at Newland.
The agricultural meeting at Newland Saturday was quite largely attended, although only a dozen or fifteen people went from Rensselaer. There were a bunch of fertilizer agents there and practically all of the people from the immediate surrounding country. Prof. Bell’s talk was listened to with careful attention, and is said to have been very instructive. He stated that the soil there was excellent for celery, onions, cabbage, asparagus and sweet corn, while the sandy knolls or ridges were adapted to the raising of pickles, and the black and loam land was fine for sugar beets. There are many new comers Io T eating in the Gifford district about Newland and Gifford this year, and with suitable weather it is probable that a much greater acreage of onions will be put in this season than ever before. It is possible that a canning factory may be started there this year or the preliminary steps taken toward securing one. . The work of preparing the grounu for planting is now going on and two oil-pull tractors are turning over the soil at a lively rate. Ed Oliver, who is doing so much to settle up that section of the country, announces that he expects to build three more large storage warehouses at Newland this season.
