Assessment Roll Filed to Remove Rock Ledge at Momence.
The assessment roll for Momence and Yellowhead townships, Drainage District No. 1, was filed yesterday with County Judge Merrill by W. H. Savary, attorney. The total amount is $38,714.80. Thursday, ■April 8, at 10 a. m., is the hour set for the hearing of objections. Should the assessment roll be approved by the court, one of the greatest benefits to the flooded and swamp land of eastern Illinois and western Indiana will be accomplished. For a long time it has been the desire of owners of this lowland to have what is known as the Momence Rock Ridge removed from the Kankakee river. This ridge, located east of Momence and right in the channel of the river, is 300 feet wide, 200 feet long and 3 feet in depth. It has shut off the current of thff river and caused water to stand upon some of the lowlands even in the dry season of the year] Wi|th the ledge removed, whicto would have to be done by the plans for the above mentioned drainage district, the water level of the river east of the Qbstruction would be lowered 3 Met. It will be remembered that somd time last year the Indiana legislature was petitioned by property owners near the state line to furnish money for the removal of the ledge, but that body refused to come over into the state of Illinois
with an appropriation for work that should be done here. That there will be little objection to the assessment is the prediction of A tty. Savary and the much needed deepening of the river channel will come to pass.—Kankakee (HL> Democrat.
