AT twenty-three to part my hair A comb I needed like a trowel; At fifty-three ’tis sparse and spars ‘ .1 use a towel! At twenty-three my step was blithe t And bounding as a bunny rabbit's; At fifty-three qld time a tithe / Has changed my habits! At twenty-three I loved the dew That is the dawning’s bright adorner; At fifty-three I’m partial to The chimney corner! At twenty-three my speech’s flow Was springlike, sprightly and prolific; At fifty-three I often grow Quite soporific! At twenty-three the wooded-hills Were filled with airy creatures Attic; At fifty-three they harbor ills And aches rheumatic! At twenty-three Calliope I wooed with all ,the lyric graces; At fifty-three, alas, at me She makes dry faces! At twenty-three to Venus I Breathed vows in sundry spots and ehady; ' At fifty-three I’m rather shy Of that fair lady! At .twenty-three, with ardent eyes, I looked on life without a tremor; At fifty-three, in staider wise, I'm but a dreamer! —Town Topics. Hard to Recognize. Simeon Ford was standing in the lobby of his Grand Union hotel when a tall, portly, well dressed man entered and leaned over the cigar stand, carefully examining the wares within before making a purchase. “I know that man,” said Mr. Ford. “His face is perfectly familiar, but somehow I can’t place him at the moment, and I’m supposed never to forget" a guest after speaking to him once!”
Mr. Ford was evidently annoyed. He stepped across to the cigar stand, passed the time of day with the portly, well dressed man and came back again. “Did you identify him?” asked the acquaintance to whom Mr. Ford had been speaking. “Oh, yes. He’s the barber who has shaved me every z ,other daj’ for eight years. But this is the first time I ever saw him with his white coat off and his black derby on.”—New York Sun.
