The decision in this case may, in the minds of the gangsters and machi*r%Apoliticians, who are riding the democratic party in Indiana to destruction, fully vindicate them, but the people of the state and the democratic party as a whole have their own opinion still. While it is true that.the republicans have been almost as had in the past in this rdspeet, it does not excuse the democrats in the least. Sonie-

As was generally expectod in the legislative cases submitted to Judge 1 Markey of the Marion county crimi-' nal court, against twelve democratic members of the IS 12 legislature, who had been indicted for filing or presenting false claims for services of some of the surplus employes of
‘ said legislature, all got off scot free. The Court held that the law of 1895, ' fixing the number of such employes was Invalid. Thirty-four indictments had been returned and twelve of the ! thirteen men Indicted were arraigned cm an agreed statement of facts. The other eases against them, were nolprossed. This decision means, if it means anything at all, that each legislature can have just as many unnecessary employes as it wishes. In fact, berths can be provided for all the gang shouters, and the tax-payers must foot the bill.
So all the birds, too, feasted in their joy. - . Glad children 'round the Christmas tree would sing, And point to glittering ball and painted toy. A sheaf of grain they fastened on the eaves, On every hearth, a fat fowl in the pot Was stewing for the happy meal to come. And while the mother made the raisined bread— Her eager brood tased for a crust, a crumb. Out in the stable, where sleek cattle stood. The father gave out extra grain and hay, Because dumb beasts their mangerbed had lent, When Christ was born on that far Christmas day. All those who had, with neighbors poor would share! Each held himself a steward of hig. Lord— Gave humble thanks for plenteous yield, And by life's blessings was subdued and awed! * * Today, the devil-lust of war lays waste This, land of innocence, of simple joys. Across the farm-fields, carrying fire and death, A sacking army ruthlessly deploys. Oh, sad Christmastide, and rent the hearts, And blood-stained is the path bv wood and fen, Where these, in faith, once heard the ■ angel’s voice,. Proclaiming peace dn earth, good- . will to men! : ‘ ■ —New York Times.
