A Severe Blow to Clubs Supporting Bars.

The supreme court handed down a decision Thursday which means that all clubs, lodges, etc., which have heretofore dispensed intoxicating liquors to their members, is illegal. It has been the custom of the Elks and kindred orders to conduct a bar in their lodge or club rooms and sell liquors to members without taking' out a retail liquor license, the profits arising from such sales going to the order. In the case at bar the steward of the Portland Order of Larks, was convicted of conducting a blind tiger. The plan there was to sell tickets or coupons to lodge members only which were good in exchange for intoxicating liquors. The decision will knock out the bars in all the high-toned clubs in the state, including the Marion Club of Indianapolis, the “upper ten” republican club of the capitol city.
