Telegraphic Reports From Many Parts of the Country. SHORT BITS OF THE UNUSUAL Uappenings In Distant and Nearby Cities and Towns.——Matters of Minor Mention From Many Places. Indicted Legislators “Tried” On False Claim Charges. The legislators indicted by the recent Marion county grand jury for presenting false claims, were put on trial at Indianapolis Thursday on an agreed statement of acts, hut one of the cases, of course, being taken up. There is little probability of a conviction, as the' defense will be that there was no intention of fraud and also that each legislature is a law unto itself as to the number of employes it has, etc., despite the plain language of the statute of fB9o, Jixing a limit to the number of such employes. LATER—When the cases were called it was decided to try all at once on the agreed statement of facts, and all were submitted except that against John J. Keegan, who was in Washington, D. C. Judge Markey took the matter under advisement, and will render a decision soon.
