Jasper County Democrat, Volume 17, Number 56, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 21 October 1914 — New Hammond-Chicago Passenger Rate in Effect Nov. 1. [ARTICLE]
New Hammond-Chicago Passenger Rate in Effect Nov. 1.
A new passenger rate will go into effect between Hammond and Chicago November 1, and the double or twin commutation tickets and the ten ride commutation ticket will be abolished. The fare will thereafter be 50 cents one way, instead of 25 cents as is now possible under the old commutation tickets. A 25-ride ticket will be issued for $6.25, good for 60 days only, while the 10 ride tickets heretofore issued, cost but $2.60 and were good for one year. There is still one way of “beating the railroads” in this matter, if one has the time to spare. That is to take a street car from Hammond, changing at 63d street to the elevated. The fare this way, if we remember correctly, is but 15c, and one can go to almost any part of the city or get off right in the loop district. As most people going in on the Monon take a street car to go uptown from the Dearborn statibn, the fare from Hammond in on this rotite should only be figured at 10c. It takes from a half to three-quarters of an hour longer perhaps to go by street car.
