REGISTRATION DAY, OCTOBER 5.
Every Legal Voter in Jasper County Must Be Registered on Above Date if He Expects to Vote in November. In order to be eligible to vote at the November election every voter in Indiana must first be registered. Former registrations do not count. You must register in your respective \oting precinct on Monday, October 5, if you intend to cast a ballot in November. The legislature of 1913 amended the registration law that was first enacted in 1911. The old law, after its first try-out two years ago, was regarded as being too complicated and too expensive, so a number of changes were made. The old law made provisions for three compulsory registration periods, which meant a great duplication of work. The new law (now in force) provides for only one compulsory registration period which, this year, will be held on -Monday, October 5, the 29th day prior to the election. This is the day on which Jasper county voters must present themselves before the registration board in their precinct if they expect to vote on November 3rd. The new law also prvides, however, that the registration board shall remain in session during the next succeeding one of two days, when so requested in writing by ten voters of the precinct, three of whom shall be freeholders. The board must be in session from 6 O'clock a. m., till the hour of 9 o clock p. m., and shall remain in session until it has fully completed its books and done all of the things required by the registration law. Under the new law the registration board shall be made up of representatives of the two parties casting the highest number of votes in the county. This is different from the general election law which provides that the election board shall be made up
of representatives of the two parties] casting the highest number or votes in the siate. Thus there will be' democratic members on ’ll the regie- 1 t rat ion boards, but in some counties the republicans will be represented and in Others' the progressives. Only the democratic and progressive parties will be represented on the elec- ! lion boards in November. One of the most important see-' tions of the new registration law is' the one which provides for the regis- i tration of legal voters who are sick ! or quarantined or are unavoidably! absent from the county. All other voters must appear before the board ’ and register in person. This new section of the law makes the following provisions: “Any person who will be entitled to vote at such election and who on the day and at the time of such registration is unable to register at such sesison of said board of registration. by reason of the sickness of himself, or by reason of his unavoidable absence from the county, pr by reason of his being quarantined, shall he entitled to register. Without appearing before the board of registration in person, by making a similar application to what would be required of him if He was applying for registration to the board of registration in person, as provided in section nine of this act, and, in addition, he shall state in such application that on the day and at the time of the regular session of the board of registration of his precinct, he is, or will be, unavoidably absent from the county, stating his whereabouts on the day or days of registration, or is sick, or is quarantined, gs the case may be, and that thereby and by reason thereof is prevented from registering in person at said session of said board. Such application shall be signed before an officer authorized to administer oaths and having an official seal: and two freeholders residing in such precinct shall certify on said application that they are acquainted with s>uch applicant, and that he is the person lie represents himself to be and that the facts stated in his aplication are true.” Such application shall be delivered to the board by any registered voter of the precinct on the 29th day before the election, being October 5 this year. Every voter should remember that unless he is properly registered in his precinct on Monday, October 5, be will not be permitted to vote on election day.
