In Mexico, Patriotically, Affair of Rival Bandits; Commercially, Affair of Rival Corporations
By HENRY WATTERSON
THE old, old story truly in Mexico. Behind each cutthroat chief stands some cutthroat corporation. Patriotically, it is an affair of rival bandits. Commercial]v, it is an affair of rival companies. THE PEON MAKES GOOD FOOD FOR POWDER AKD BALL. Comps the uplift crowd, preaching in English the gospel of humanity to mongrels 'who mistake it for cowardice —who can’t understand its pica for justice and fraternity and neither appreciate nor desire its good offices—to propose for the downtrodden Mexicans a plan of reconstruction recalling that put forward by the extreme radicals of the north in favor of the newly freed slaves of the south after the war of sections. As this latter broke down of its'own inherent weakness and rottenness, would a similar attempt of the United States in favor of the peons of Mexico break down? * THERE IS BUT ONE WAY TO HELP THEM AND THAT IS TO TAKE THEM IN OUT OF THE WEATHER, OUT OF THE REIGN OF BLOOD AND MONEY WHICH HAS DELUGED THEM SINCE THE SPANISH CONQUEST, NOW WORSE UNDER THEIR ALLEGED REPUBLIC THAN UNDER THE ANCIENT VICEROYS—IN OTHER WORDS, TO ANNEX THEM. IN DEFAULT OF THIS WE ARE AT SEA. WE REFUSED TO RECOGNIZE HUERTA, WHO MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN EMBRYO DIAZ. IF VILLA, THE FIGHTER, COMES TO THE HEAD OF AFAIRS AND SETS UP A MILITARY DESPOTISM, A LA DIAZ, WE CAN’T RECOGNIZE HIM, AND IN NO EVENT DOES HE SEEM A PERSONAL IMPROVEMENT ON HUERTA. CARRANZA, THE CONSTITUTIONALIST, AN ARISTOCRAT IN FACT, AND BY CONJECTURE A PATRIOT, PROPOSES TO GO HIS OWN GAIT, THE REPRESENTATIVE OF INTERESTS THAT KNOW PRECISELY WHAT THEY WANT.
