Here’s Another Emblem.
Oh, a wonderful tree is the tree of milk —■ That the Colonel found in Brazil; Its hide is as soft as the softest silk And for feed it runs never a bill. The natives depend on these marvelous trees In a way that occasions remark; Thus they gather milk and butter and cheese 4 And shoes they make from the bark. Each tree gives to them a respectable roast, Its steaks have a wonderful charm And taste like those others we commonly boast That are cooked at home on the farm. The fruit of the tree is the butternut, The bloom is the fair oxeye. And never this tree will kick or butt Or hook at the passer-by. The milkmaid needs not to call it home, Its young never goes astray, It loves to stick in its native loam And there is no bill for hay. Oh. the moose, the donkey, the elephant As emblems are fine as can be, But we long to see on a banner, rampant, The vigorous bull milk tree! —Chicago News.
