Former Sheriff of Lake County Killed at Cedar Lake.
Fred Carter, 42 years old, general manager of the Hammond Brewery and formerly democratic sheriff of Lake county, was instantly killed Thursday afternoon at Cedar Lake, when he was caught in his automobile on a crossing by Monon train No. 33, southbound. Ambrose Vrbaneic, an Fast Hammond saloon keeper, who was with Carter in the automobile, was probably fatally injured. Carter is survived by a widow and three children. He was born in Valparaiso, Ind. In 1 900 Carter defeated Lawrence Cox, of Hammond, republican, for sheriff. He was the first democrat in Lake county .o break through the solid front which the republicans had presented for years.
