“Salvation Army” Man Breaks His Whiskey Bottle.
An elderly couple of alleged Salvation Army people, a man and a woman, struck Rensselaer Saturday afternoon or evening, and entertained a crowd on Washington street for awhile in the evening. The woman passed through the crowd and into the business houses all along and gathered in a good many nickels and dimes. While she was engaged in this lucreative pursuit, the man sat on a bench in front of Fendig’s drug store, and on getting up, a pint bottle fell from his pocket and was datfhed to pieces on the cement sidewalk, while the odor of whiskey pervaded the atmosphere.
'f’he bottle had a label brand unknown to Rensselaer, so it was evident the man had brought it here with him. He was much flustrated over the accident, and denied its being his bottle before any of the bystanders had a chance to give him the horse-laugh. The man took a sneak, and both got out of town that night, it is undertsood. The couple were evidently snides and probably had no connection with the Salvation Army, which as an organization, is doing a great - r ork in the uplul of humanity. Such imposters, which the couple evidently were, ought to be prosecuted and put where they would not impose upon the public under the cloak of a reputable religious organization.
