Facts vs. Falsehoods.
The Rensselaer Republican, the editors of which, assisted by two or three “democrat” patriots has for some time been attempting to run both the f democrat and republican parties here as well as dictating to the Bull Moosers, a dual role indeed, but such a role is not hard for those fellows to adopt. Recently in speaking of the late district convention at Hammond, the Republican said: “W. H. Blodgett attended the democratic district organization convention in Hammond Monday and reported it for the Indianapolis News. Blodgett is carrying out the policy of The News to give Murphy anil Taggart the worst of it without regard to facts. He stated in his write-up that Congressman Peterson came all the way from Washington to help elect Murphy. As a matter of fact Congress adjourned last week until Jan. 12th and Congressman Peterson came to his home in ( rown Point for the vacation and quite naturally went to Hammond to meet his constituents in convention. Quite naturally there were some postmasters whom Mr. Peterson had endorsed went to Hammond, knowing that the Congressman would be there and desiring to thank him for their appointments. Blodgett makes a big fuss because they were there The more Billy Blodgett writes about things we know something about, the less credence we give articles below his name that report occurrences in other places in the state.” Now one must admit that the papers in Mr. Peterson’s own town probably know as much about what called him home as the Republican, and the Crown Point Star, in its last issue, said: 'Congressman J. B. Peterson has spent the past few days in Crown Point, but expects a call from Washington the latter part of the week. He came to Crown Point from Quitman, Miss., where he and Mrs. Peterson spent the holidays, with their daughter. Belle, Who is beautifully situated there. The Congressman’s visit, to Lake county at this time was to straighten out the muddle in the 10th district over the chairmanship, and the re-election of Chas. Murphy, of Brookston, looks as though John B. is in control of the situation over the district as tho strong opposition failed to connect when the meeting was called.” Perhaps if this bunch of local Dr. •lekyls and Mr. Hydes who write the editorial matter for the Republican would not attempt to cover so much ground they would be better able to give more facts and less fiction. The readers of that sheet might also have more confidence in its sayings if ft was not trying to serve so many masters.
