Alfred Dennis, the young man who recently swindled sieverali Brook merchants out of about SIOO by forged checks, was arrested in St. Louis last week by deputy Sheriff Howard Aleyers, and brought back to face the charges against him. He had enlisted in the army under the name of Gardner. The young man was brought over to Rensselaer on Saturday and lodged in jail to await the next term of - court in Newton county.
Thomas Reed and Harry Cook, both of township, had a little set-to in Leek’s hitch barn in Rensselaer Saturday night, in which both sustained a few- minor scratches and cuts. The trouble originated over the threshing accounts in their neighborhood, in which there has been sort of a neighborhood row- ail fall. Cook had Reed arrested for assault and battery and the case was tried by Squire Irwin Monday afternoon. Reed was found guilty and fined $1 and costs, $12.90 in all, whiich he paid, and the trouble is said to be at an end.
