A touch of real cold struck us Wednesday night, and Thursday morning the mercury touched the zero mark. Yesterday was quite pleasant and above the freezing mark in the shade even. Pinkamink Tribe, Independent Order of Red Men, will occupy their new quarters in the Democrat building January 1. The hall has been newly papered, painted and wired for their use, and with the new furniture that the lodge is buying they will have very nice quarters indeed. Thanks to Judge Wiley, the good people of Benton county know what a highball is. It is a little whiskey with some seltzer water squirted to it and some ice. But we do not think, though it may be more fashionable, that it i s any better than the old way of drinking it from a tin cup.—Fowler Leader. Washington item: John B. Peterson of Crown Point, recently elected representative of the Tenth district, to succeed Representative Crumpacker, has applied for the place on the rivers and harbors committee that will be made vacant by the retirement of Representative Boebne, of Evansville. He is spending a few days in Washington, and will visit New York before returning to his home.
