Isidor Rayner, U. S. Senator from Maryland, a democratic leader in the upper house of congress, died at his home in Washington Monday after an illness of several months. He will be succeeded by a republican, the governor pis that state being a republican, ar.4, of course, will appoint a republican to fill tbe vacancy.

Samuel M. Ralston, Governorelect, has followed the precedent established by a number of former Governors in naming a newspaper man as his private secretary. B. B. Johnson, of Richmond, who will serve as private secretary to the governor during the coming administration, was a newspaper man for many years, having published papers at Kokomo and Richpiond. He was connected with an Indianapolis paper a few years ago as an editorial writer, and is familiar with the “newspaper game.” His son, Fred B. Johnson, an at-

torney at Indianapolis, established the School of Journalism at Indiana University.

Mr. Johnson will go to Indianapolis soon to take up his work. He and Mr. Ralston have been friends for many years. Mr. Johnson was known as an able newspaper man and his appointment is regarded with favor by 1 democratic leaders.
