James Fuher. who is working in Hammond at the carpenter’s trade, spent Sunday with his family here. Everett Halstead, who 'has been at White River Junction, Vt., for some time, came home Saturday evening to register. Ross Goble has gone to Lafayette where he has secured a position in the dress goods department of the M. Sschultz department store. His family will remain here for a while at least. Frank Putts came home recently from North Dakota, where he has been working in the harvest fields, and has an infected leg. It was opened and about a quart of pus; taken from it. It is thought he will! get along all right now.
Mrs. Ketchum, the aged mother of the late George P. Ketchum, died at Gilman. 111., Monday. The remains will be brought here Thursday on the early morning train and buria! made in Westoo cemetery beside the body of her husband. Fire destroyed about 800 tons o> wild hay in bale at Stoutsburg last Wednesday. The hay was stacked up at the station awaiting cars lor shipment. It belonged to Guild & Robinson of Medaryville, F. M. Hart of Demotte and George Stembel and H. W. Marble 0? Wheatfleld. The loss was partly covered by insurance, it is said. There was about 1,200 tons piled up there, but the fire was gotten under control so that a part of it was saved. v Joe Nagel received a letter a few days ago from his brother, Mike Nagel of near Mitchell, So. Dak., and Mike is sure right “in it" this year. He had 160 acres of the best wheat in that vicinity and it yielded 6,800 bushels. His oats made 30 bushels to the acre and he has 120 acres of as fine corn as he ever raised. Last year considerable of his crops were ruined by hail and weather conditions, but he will clean up a nice bunch of yellow-backs this season.
Big Time At Virgie a Success. One of the largest crowds ever in Virgie was at the celebration of John Reed’s 48th birthday anniversary. Saturday night,. W. H. Groen- J dyke, independent nominee for state senator spoke for 45 minutes. His subject was Agricultural Ascendancy and justice to the farmers. They were then entertained by Professor J. H. Barnum, the world’s greatest magician and ventriloquist. He kept them laughing with his mystifying tricks and ventriloquism, which were very good. Then a dance. Headed by John Reed and his friends from Skemotte, Kersey, 'Wfceaft field, (No. Judson, Knox, Kniman, Rensselaer, Parr, Fair Oaks, Roselawn, Foresman, Good land, Reminjgton, Tefft, Montloello, and also Chicago and Indianapolis. They all danced until about 3:30 in the morning . Everybody declared it was tht best time they had ever had. Thk will be the last dance at Virgie until next spring. Mr. and Mrs. John Reed and family wish to thank their many friends for their large attendance and good order. xx
