Big Barn Struck By Lightning In Carpenter Township.
The big barn on the farm occupied by Lawrence Kellner four miles north and one mile east of Remington, was struck by lightning about midnight Monday night and burned together with its contents. There was no stock lost, the horses being out in the pasture, but the loss on bay and grain, etc., belonging to Mr. Kellner will probably total several hundred dollars. The farm is owned by an Illinois man, and the barn was a good one, 40x60 feet with a new 16-foot shed on three sides, and was probably worth |1,200 at. least. Insurance was carried on both the barn and contents, but we were unable to learn the amount.
Mr. Kellner was at Rensselaer Monday night, at hie _ brother’s, Conrad Kellner’s, until quite late, and the barn must have burned before he reached home. We understand Lawrence has just purchased a new Apperson auto and was here Monday night in his new car. A good barn, built new last year, was also struck by lightning and burned on the Henry Plootz farm four miles north of Mt. Ayr Monday night. The farm is occupied by Mr. Ploetz's tenant, who also lost a horse and cow. outside the barn, by lightning. C. L. Parks of near Surrey also had a cow killed by lightning during the same storm.
